BIG SING for a BIG CAUSE

Connect. Collaborate. Have fun. Feel good. Make friends. Make a difference.
Sing or play with ACU students, staff and others in a casual, low-pressure atmosphere. No auditions or experience required -- just bring your enthusiasm. 
 

ABOUT THE 'BIG CAUSE' 

Our “cause” for 2025 is Mental Health and Wellbeing. The theme will inform our repertoire, advocacy and fundraising efforts. 
 

PERFORMANCES

Those who learn the music remotely will need to come to Melbourne at the end of June to join in the performances. Each performance will be preceded with an afternoon dress rehearsal, plus there will be another weeknight rehearsal a day or two prior (check "Events" for updates).

St Patrick's Cathedral: Friday 27 June (evening)
Preston Market: Saturday 28 June (evening)

CHOIR (on campus) REHEARSALS 

When: Tuesday 1-2PM during semester 1 
Where: Recital Hall (408.G.11) or the Chapel (Daniel Mannix Building) or as specified.

Intensives

Can't make it on a Tuesday lunchtime? Join up to sing in the intensives on Mondays, 5-6:30PM (light meal provided).

COMBINED REHEARSALS
Additional rehearsals will be scheduled in June, involving the combined choirs, orchestra etc., leading up to the June performances. (Check the SCHEDULE on the Big Sing page:  https://aculife.acu.edu.au/ChoirMelbourne/bigsing2025/ ).
 

What to bring?

You should bring your music with you, once it has been distributed. This will be explained further in rehearsals. 

What does it cost?

Free for ACU students. A small fee will be charged to others to pay for the cost of the music. 

Support services and accessibility

We are working with ACU's Student Support Services to improve access and inclusion for all students. Please let us know what you need. (We welcome anyone who want to join our Co-Design Team, too!)


 

ZOOM REHEARSALS (optional)

You can opt to learn the music remotely via Zoom, then come to Melbourne to join in the final rehearsals and performances. A weekly, 45-minute online Zoom rehearsal will occur at 5PM on Tuesdays. Recordings will then be posted on the website.
 

COMMUNITY CHOIR: external option

Justice Choir Naarm (Melbourne), directed by ACU's Dr Kathleen McGuire, will be rehearsing on weekends. semi-monthly. You are welcome to join in. This group is a more formal, established group of about 30 experienced singers. Let us know if you'd like more information.
 

CAN I PLAY AN INSTRUMENT?

YES! There are opportunities for instrumentalists to join as well, which can be orchestral or rock-band instruments. Rehearsals for instrumentalists will start late-April or early-May. Please LET US KNOW if you are interested in playing an instrument and we will add you to the list. 

CAN I AUDITION FOR A VOCAL SOLO?

Yes! If you have solo vocal skills, let us know. Auditions will be announced in due course. 

WHAT COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED?

We ask that you attend most rehearsals (missing a few here and there is okay). Basically it's up to you to be "performance ready" by concert week (end of June). In addition to the live and online rehearsals, there will also be combined rehearsals after Semester 1 with other choirs and the instrumentalists. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT / SERVICE

Students involved in the Big Sing will be able to apply for Community Engagement hours for units. Staff can apply for Community Service release time.
