Uniform and Textbook Exchange (UTE)

The Uniform and Textbook Exchange (UTE) is a program set up by the Brisbane Speech Pathology Society, in conjunction with faculty staff. The aim of the program is to help students who may be struggling to acquire some of the prescribed texts and uniform items needed for success in their studies. We have noticed many students at ACU have recently moved out of home or have moved from a regional hometown to Brisbane for study, which puts them at an increased risk of financial stress. The program also allows students who are finishing their time as a student to 'give back' to the student speech pathology community. While the program was initially co-designed by staff and students, the program is run by students for students.

Benefits of participating in the UTE program:

For donors: The satisfying feeling of helping others; the opportunity to ‘give back’ to the student community; a convenient way to address items no longer needed.

For recipients: Access to second-hand textbook and uniform items with little stress compared to sourcing from marketplace/other avenues; Alleviation of the potential barriers of financial stress in accessing required course items. Access to textbooks that students may not have otherwise considered purchasing.

For the student society: Raising the society’s profile in supporting students

For Academic Staff: Well supported students have a greater chance of success in the speech pathology program (student retention benefits).

What UTE is not

● A way for the student society to make a profit. Financial gains as a result of UTE recipients making a monetary exchange for items should be offset by expenses (including covering postage for interstate donations and the acquisition of UTE inventory)

● A way for all students to acquire all prescribed texts each semester. Students facing financial stress and other barriers to acquiring texts and uniforms are given priority access to UTE items. These students are either identified by academic staff or are self-identified.

UTE Stalls

The Brisbane Speech Pathology Society aims to host regular stalls on campus throughout the academic semesters to showcase the donations we have accumulated and allow students easy access to donations.

"Give what you can, take what you need"

How It All Works...

UTE is designed to be an exchange program. E.g. Bring in your 2nd year texts and swap them for 3rd year texts or exchange your semester 1 prescribed texts for some texts needed in semester 2.

Items are organised into categories, based on the level of use anticipate in each of the speech pathology units at ACU. We have gone through all of the unit handbooks and made a note all the texts which are prescribed, recommended, or representative. Items are assigned a 'value' based on their category. For example, a prescribed text is 'more valuable' than a recommended text. We also take the publish date into account. Current editions are 'more valuable' than early editions.

Uniform items are categorised in a similar way. The charcoal coloured placement shirts are considered 'less valuable' because ACU is eventually phasing these shirts out.

You can make a direct exchange for a book you desire for a book in the same category, or any category above. You can make a partial exchange with a book from a category below the item you desire. If you don't have anything to exchange, you can make a monetary donation to BSPS in exchange for any item.

Uniform Items

UTE is currently accepting donations of speech pathology polo shirts, charcoal coloured shirts and jackets.

When donating a pre-loved uniform item, please ensure that it is clean prior to donation.

UTE Sucess at Market Day

Brisbane Speech Pathology Society launched our UTE program during week 1 of semester, at Market Day. The stall was visited by over 30 students from across the year levels. Many first year students were able to grab themselves a bargain, and were delighted with the range of books UTE had to offer.

Some happy second year students walked away with spare placement polos and even an ACU jacket. UTE was able to offer a polo shirt in every size, as well as some mens sizes!

Students were grateful that UTE could offer access to textbooks and uniforms for an exchange or at really affordable prices.

"This has saved me a lot of money! I can't believe the range of books here, you have every subject covered"- Caitlyn, 1st year student.

"We had a speech pathology student come into the library to cancel a loan request because she had picked up the textbook she needed from the Speech Pathology Society at Welcome Back Day" - Qi, ACU Librarian

"Having a large collection of books on a subject is handy to diversify those assignment reference lists" - Ash, 4th yr student

"You have just saved me about $30 for a second placement shirt, I thought it would be a good idea to have a spare." - 2nd yr student

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

We are currently looking for a UTE officer to join our team. This is an easy volunteer role within the society and would suit students wanting to add volunteer experiences to their resume, wanting to build connections with other students, or wanting to make a real difference within the student community.
